Courtney Sommer

Courtney Sommer (she/her)  found her way to the practice of yoga after a significant mountain biking accident left her with a traumatic brain injury in 2014. In the beginning, yoga served as a vehicle for physical healing, but quickly became a spiritually and emotionally supportive practice for Courtney. When she found The River as a student in 2016, she finally felt like she had found her “third space”, a place of acceptance, loving-kindness, growth, and joy.

The River has emotionally and physically supported Courtney through her many adventures in her professional and personal life, including becoming a new mother in 2020. Courtney attended The River's 200-hour teacher training in the winter of 2019 with Katy Rowe and Kady Lafferty as her teachers. She teaches river flow classes and will attend Breanna Taylor's Yin training in March 2023. She is also certified to teach Young Warriors children's yoga classes.

Courtney is passionate about serving others in a lovingly challenging way, pushing students outside of their comfort zone into a shared experience of personal transformation. Her classes are physically challenging, and energetic and aim to push students to their physical and mental edge, all while bringing humor and joy into the space.

Outside of class, Courtney is a Licensed Clinical and School Social Worker and serves as the Manager of Mental Health and Behavior for Denver Public Schools. When she is not working, you can find her spending time in the mountains and on the river with her 2 1/2-year-old daughter and husband.
